Where's My Hairspray?

Where’s my hairspray, you ask? We have recently experienced many long-term backorders on some of your favorite styling products, but why? New VOC regulations have been imposed on manufacturers in the Beauty Cosmetics industry. As a result, finishing sprays, shine sprays, dry shampoos, and other styling sprays are being reformulated and are missing from our shelves. Reformulating and maintaining performance are a big challenge that all manufacturers are struggling to achieve.

What are VOC's?

VOCs are volatile organic compounds with high vapor pressure typically found in almost all your aerosol products. VOCs are ingredients like alcohol and certain other types of propellants. When exposed to the sun, alcohol breaks down and becomes acetaldehyde, an extremely harmful substance to our ozone layer. Breathing in VOCs can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat and, over time, has been shown to cause certain types of blood cancers, such as leukemia. They can also cause you to feel terrible by giving you headaches and nausea and damaging your liver, kidneys, and central nervous system.

How will this affect you personally?

Depending on the product and the changes necessary for them to comply with the new regulations, you may notice a change in your product. Some people report their hairspray doesn't dry as quickly or feels more "wet". Some with a keen sense of smell report different scents with their hairsprays or that the scent dissipates more quickly. You may have to find a temporary hairspray while yours is in the long line of reformulations waiting to be manufactured.

  • Product Formulation: VOC regulations may require beauty companies to reformulate their products to meet the specified emission standards. This could lead to changes in the ingredients used and the overall composition of certain beauty products.
  • Product Availability: If certain beauty products contain high levels of VOCs and fail to comply with the regulations, they may be restricted or banned from the market. This could mean that your favorite hairspray will no longer be made or could be out for an extended period of time to reformulate. Plus, with so many products being reformulated at once, manufacturing plants are backed up, leaving smaller brands at the bottom of lists to receive their propellants.
  • Pricing: Reformulating products to meet VOC regulations could potentially increase manufacturing costs for beauty companies. These increased costs might be passed on to consumers through higher product MSRP (Manufacture Suggested Retail Pricing).

  • We understand how frustrating changes are to your favorite products. When you find the right product, it is hard to find a new one that compares, and that is frustrating. This is why we wanted to take the time to explain the changes. Beauty Care Choices is here to keep you as informed as possible on delays and help you find alternatives if necessary.
