Ingredient: DMDM Hydantoin

DMDM Hydantoin and Imidazolindinyl Urea are formaldehyde releasers, which means they break down to form the toxic chemical formaldehyde. These ingredients act as preservatives to help hold product formulas together and prolong their shelf life, as well as prevent bacteria and fungal growth. They can be found in hair care, skin care and cosmetics.

Seeing irritated skin? Check your skin care & cosmetic ingredient labels!

Because most people realize formaldehyde is bad for them. Formaldehyde has been around and used as a cheap preservative since 1889. As multitude of studies found serious health risk associated with this ingredient, many manufacturers stopped using it directly and therefore don't have to list it on their labels. Instead they mask (read as HIDE) this preservative under formaldehyde releasers like DMDM Hydantoin and Imidazolindinyl Urea. These ingredients act just like formaldehyde in congealing and preserving products, as well as the damage they can do to our bodies.

Formaldehyde can irritate the respiratory system, cause skin reactions and trigger heart palpitations. Exposure to formaldehyde may cause joint pain, allergies, depression, headaches, chest pains, ear infections, chronic fatigue, dizziness and loss of sleep. So, just because your product does not list formaldehyde directly, doesn't mean it's not in there. Be vigilant and avoid DMDM Hydantoin and Imidazolindinyl Urea too!
