Ingredient: Retinol

This is a very popular skincare ingredient; but what is it and how does it work? Retinol is a yellow compound found in green and yellow vegetables, egg yolk, and fish-liver oil. It is essential for growth and vision in dim light. It is a form of Vitamin A which promotes skin renewal and enhances collagen production. Retinoid receptors are proteins naturally found in the skin. They act like shuttles that carry and release retinoids (Vitamin A derivatives) into skin cells, triggering collagen production. Retinol is the strongest form of retinoid available without a prescription. It is converted by skin enzymes into the even stronger form of Retinoic Acid, which sometimes causes irritation at first.

Retinol is best for women over 30 who are starting to see the fine lines and wrinkles. If your skin routine includes retinol, vitamin C and a good serum, apply straight after cleansing. Using a retinol-based product may make the top layer of your skin dry and flaky. It's best to apply it at night and wear moisturizer and sunblock the next morning.

Retinols give skin a rosy appearance, fade age and sunspots, and helping reduce wrinkles in problem areas on the face and neck. Retinoid acid, which is what retinol is converted into, works to increase cell turnover, stimulate collagen and elastin production, fade hyperpigmentation, and help skin stay hydrated and glowing. If that isn't enough, with its ability to stimulate the metabolism of skin cells, it also reduces large pores and evens out skin's texture. So when it comes to anti-aging, there really isn't anything better to give you a youthful appearance.
